2017 McLaren Vale Grenache
RATNG: 95
Toby Bekkers (and family) story of their own label is intertwined in detail and labour, with a focus on vineyard, which could come out of the marketing playbook, only it’s really real in this case. A dedicated, site-focussed project with wines that follow vineyard, rather than wines made to market.
These are a very impressive suite of wines each release.
Here’s a world class grenache.
Svelte and lithe, perfumed and delicately flavoured, a beautiful wine that reveals itself quietly in the glass. Scents of dried raspberry, pomegranate, cherry, green herbs and briar, a touch of mushroom. The palate sits just over medium weight, shaped well with a spread of lacy tannins, drawn long on lightly creamy texture, a generosity of ripe fruit flavour but understated too, and finishes fine and pitch-perfect gently sweet. You could say ‘a pinosity here’ but it’s wholly grenache, and excellent for that. Excellent indeed.
