Violets and hints of toasty oak mark the nose, while the full-bodied palate of Bekkers 2015 Syrah shows a lovely supple expansiveness. Cola, plum and spice notes glide into every crevice on the palate, leaving behind a lush, creamy sensation that lingers on the finish.

A chance meeting between French winemaker, Emmanuelle, and Australian viticulturist, Toby, (one of Australia’s most respected authorities on organics and biodynamics) resulted in the Bekkers label. The pair have travelled extensively, visiting some of Europe’s top producers. This is their flagship wine and blends fruit from two different vineyards. Fermentation is kicked off by natural yeasts, before the wine is matured for 20 months in French puncheons, 40% of which are new.

TG: An excellent balance of fresh cherry fruit and vibrant acidity here-lively and lipsmacking! Integrated sweet oak and a hint of tobacco spice sit alongside a refreshing herbal character and fine fruit tannins.

RJ: Very bright acidity on the palate, with cherries, frangipane and soft vanilla oak. Needs time, but evolves beautifully in the glass; the cherries get riper and there is a lovely softness to the wine.

AR: Vibrant, fresh fruit aromas, with lots of energy. Overall the picture is bright, with lots of vivacious black cherry and kirsch fruit, in a seamlessly textured, albeit still elementally youthful red.

  • The Wine Detective, Sarah Ahmed (U.K.) 2015 Bekkers Syrah: "Probably the best modern-style McLaren Vale Syrah I’ve tasted."

You might expect to see Syrah on Australian labels from cool climate wine regions. But McLaren Vale? Well, this is a truly Bilingüe, Fraustralian wine – Mr (Toby) Bekkers, the viticulturist, is Australian and Mrs (Emmanuelle) Bekkers, the winemaker, is French (click here for my report of a visit in 2015).   Probably the best modern-style McLaren Vale Syrah I’ve tasted. It’s intensely fragrant and complex with a rasp of black pepper to nose and palate, liquorice, five spice, peonies and inky florals, a gentle savouriness and a touch of mocha oak. As for the fruit, supple, concentrated but juicy blackberry and plum is sumptuous, yet vivid and fresh – very persistent. Tasted at home, I lingered over this sensual Syrah for three days and it never stopped giving. I loved, loved the tannins – fine spun, but mineral (iron filing) and present, as if interwoven with the fruit. With terrific perfume, depth, length and detail, it is a seemingly bottomless pit of delights. Bet it ages really well (if you can resist it now!) The fruit was sourced from the Clarendon and Seaview sub-regions. The ferment (18% whole bunches) was long, cool and gentle. The wine was aged for 20 months in large (500l) French oak barrels, 40% new.

  • Jane Anson, Wine Revolution. 2015 Bekkers Syrah: " balances the punch and intensity of an Australian Shiraz with the elegance of the same grape from the Northern Rhone."

This wine has instant impact: rich damson in colour, with intense black spice, it balances the punch and intensity of an Australian Shiraz with the elegance of the same grape from the Northern Rhone. It seems to elongate in your mouth, with silky tannins and dark fruits backed up by chocolate notes and crunchy redcurrants. Delicious, it deepens after 15 minutes of opening, a brilliant example of why Toby Bekkers is such a sought-after consultant for organic and biodynamic farming. This is not certified, ‘and nor do I want to be,’ he says. He leaves 15% whole-bunches in the vinification, with the rest destemmed but not crushed, with natural yeasts and extremely gentle extraction, all aged in French oak barrels (40% new) and given minimal sulphur bottling. I had this with Chinese duck pancakes and it was a great match.

    Toby Bekkers 2015 Syrah
    96 pts. Five stars.
Deep, dark red/purple colour, youthfully deep and bright. There are very ripe blackberry, dark plum aromas, with earthy and sooty notes, fresh and bright with vitality and intensity. A full-bodied, marvellously concentrated, deeply-flavoured shiraz with real gravitas, persistence, and ageing ability. Outstanding. 3/10/2017

  • The Wine Front, Gary Walsh. 95pts for Bekkers Syrah 2015- “Smooth, spicy and sophisticated.”

A mix of 64% Clarendon and Seaview grapes.

Smooth, spicy and sophisticated. Red and black fruits, baking spices, a light earthiness. It’s medium to full bodied, silky fine ribbons of tannin, bright fruit, toasty and savoury black olive tapanade, nothing out of place in the middle, and impeccable length. All just so. Dare I say it, ‘elegant’?

  • Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2018. 98 pts for Bekkers 2015 Syrah- "...makes the marriage of intensity and elegance seem simple..."

    McLaren Vale Syrah 2015

    98 Points

64% Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard, 36% Gateway Vineyard, hand-picked, 18% whole bunches, 82% destemmed and sorted, 5 days cold soak, 12 days wild yeast ferment, matured 20 months in French puncheons (40% new). This makes the marriage of intensity and elegance seem simple, purity and power likewise. It is suspended in time and place with glorious fruit (no chocolate), gently savoury/spicy fine tannins and oak hiding in the panoply of fruit flavours.
