2015 Bekkers McLaren Vale Syrah Grenache
What better than a marriage of McLaren Vale's two hero varieties? A blend of 70% Shiraz and 30% Grenache, this wine rests equidistant between the fragrance of our Grenache and the mouth-filling generosity of our Syrah. It exhibits the soft, silky texture that we see as the signature of all our wines.

A 60-40 blend, the 2015 Syrah Grenache seems a bit closed at the moment. It's showing dark fruits, maybe even a hint of cola, and dried spices on the nose. It's full-bodied and concentrated, but it lacks some of the richness and drama found in the 2016. It's still a delicious wine that I'd drink in a heartbeat.
The Wine Detective: Sarah Ahmed (U.K.). Bekkers 2015 Syrah Grenache: "Uber drinkable."
A deeper hue than the straight Grenache with Shiraz earthy, pepperiness, blackberry and sweet plum. Like the Grenache, it really opens up on day two, revealing liquorice-edged swathes of blackberry fruit, with a hint of mocha oak. Striated tannins (30% whole bunch) are interwoven with fruit and acid, making for an animated, textural, bright, fresh palate. Uber drinkable.
2018 Australian Wine Vintages (The Gold Book). Rob Geddes MW. 94 pts for 2015 Bekkers Syrah Grenache: "...swirling complexity..."
A swirling complexity, minerals and fruit flowing blue into black fruits, liquorice with curry turmeric and cumin spice. The palate is very modern, mid weight, elegant, long, fragrant bowl of cherry and plums, fine-grained tannin length with a soft food friendly finish. 94 points. Five stars.
Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2018. 95 pts for Bekkers 2015 Syrah-Grenache- "... fragrant with delicate red fruits and haunting spices..."
McLaren Vale Syrah Grenache 2015
70/30% blend; Blewitt Springs grenache, open-fermented and matured separately, 15-20% whole bunches, the remainder destemmed, aged on fine lees in used French oak. The wine repays the complex time-consuming vinification. The bouquet is fragrant with delicate red fruits and haunting spices, followed by an enchanting mouthfeel as red fruits flow serenely across the mouth, the deeper tones of plum and blackberry ex the shiraz adding complexity, but not impinging on the main message.
Gourmet Traveller Wine, Huon Hooke. 95pts for 2015 Syrah Grenache- "...seamlessly textured..."
Five Stars. 95pts.
A powerful and seamlessly textured syrah grenache blend loaded with blackberry and dark-plum aromas and flavours with a sooty hint of regionality. Intense and medium-full bodied with lush fruit and soft tannins. It's already great to drink. 2-20 years.
JancisRobinson.com, Richard Hemming. 2015 Syrah Grenache: "There is a sheer pleasure to this fruit."
Some hints of burnt meat along with plush, opulent black fruit. Wonderful juiciness on the palate, smooth tannin, mouth-watering acidity and a long, impressive spicy finish. There is sheer pleasure to this fruit, and a warm, satisfying, balanced body.
WBM Magazine, Mike Bennie. 96pts for 2015 Syrah Grenache- "Modern classic."
Pure class here. Complexity is the byword, as is inherent drinkability, and the wine is a triumph in its restraint. It shows heady scents of sweet fruit, sweet spice, savoury characters, elemental earthiness but works as a sum of parts. The palate is a triumph of texture. Sits so beautifully in the mouth. Modern classic.
The Advertiser, 100 Hot Summer Drinks. Tony Love. Five stars for 2015 Bekkers Syrah Grenache: "...satisfying drinkability."
Winemaker Toby Bekkers has chosen to use the French “syrah” instead of shiraz, to state his case for a brighter, uplifted, uncluttered fruit expression of the key variety, blended here with the region’s other rock star red, grenache to achieve a delightfully balanced, medium bodied style, crimson to black berry flavours, licorice sidelights, dusty to earthy savoury notes, a dark choc-orange backdrop, and most importantly a very desirable and satisfying drinkability. Drink with: Middle Eastern lamb. Five Stars.
