2011 BEKKERS, Syrah, McLaren Vale, South Australia – first taste

A quick post on a wondrous bottle of wine which Toby and Emmanuelle Bekkers posted to me this week. There is no doubt that the packaging and feel of this wine is sublime. I love the gravitas of the label and the subtle logo. In spite of the wine’s youth it is remarkably composed. The tannins and intensity are perfectly tempered and the fruit is somewhat closed but stunningly compact and seamless. I decanted it and tasted it over three hours and it opened in the glass considerably. The texture is the most remarkable part in that it is gossamer smooth and the finish rolls on and on. At the other end the nose is varietally and regionally spot on, too! I love wines with a postcode. Well done. I think that the clear understanding of the fruit and how to extract just enough energy from the skins is impressive.

We may have to wait a while for some stock in the UK – so this is perhaps a wine to taste on your travels Down Under.
