Bekkers McLaren Vale Syrah 2011

In viticulture circles, Toby Bekkers needs no introduction – he’s a specialist in organic and biodynamic practices, essentially he has a deep connection and respect to the environment. Bekkers has also established an eponymous label with his French-born wife and winemaker, Emmanuelle. The 2011 syrah is the inaugural wine and with that price, most definitely in the splurge category. However, it is also superb with great presence, definition and will age at least 12 years with proper cellaring. Once it has opened up, it reveals a surprisingly subtle yet fragrant nose with a hint of florals, spice, cocoa and plums plus a savoury more meaty character; it’s the palate that’s so good with this wine. Full-bodied but not heavy, ripe almost textured tannins, fine acidity and while the oak is apparent, it adds to the wine’s mouth-feel and will continue to amalgamate. Excellent McLaren Vale syrah.
