Gary Walsh, Winefront. Bekkers 2013 Grenache.

If I had two of the letter K in my name, I’d be tempted to place them ‘back to back’ too.  I’m tasting from bottle number 0359, though I don’t know how many of them were made. Can confirm, of course, that it’s an absolute minimum of 359.

Perfumed, laden with raspberries and spice, peppermint and chocolate. Medium bodied, silky smooth with fine lacy tannin, clean acidity, sweet fruit, though savoury through its core. Rings clear and long on the finish. Has a minor burr from alcohol, but with Grenache, you need to crack plenty of eggs to make a tasty omelette. This is a pretty tasty omelette.  94pts.

Bekkers Syrah Grenache 2013

Posted on 20 January 2015.

Pedal to the metal on a rolling start; so it seems for Toby and Emmanuelle Bekkers and their eponymous wine project. Husband and wife, celebrated viticulturist and winemaker, respectively. This is sourced from Abri vineyard from which the excellent 2013 Bekkers Grenache wine comes from, blended with shiraz parcels from Hickinbotham and Gateway vineyards. Around 20% is whole bunch fermented, sees no inoculation of yeast, basket pressed to used French oak.

Such potent perfume. Almost an assault in sweet, pretty fruit characters chaperoned with musk, cola, briar, anise. Firm in texture, chewy tendrils of tannins amongst a pleasing, saturating slosh of red and black fruit with a big belt of dusty, peppery spice. While flavours linger, there’s a rugged earthiness and little jag of acidity in the finish that feels like it needs time … Read More »

Bekkers 2012 Mclaren Vale Syrah (95+ points) Very deep purple-black in color, the 2012 Syrah has a wonderfully expressive nose of crushed blueberries and blackberry preserves with underlying notes of violets, bouquet garni, star anise, chocolate box and cardamom. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and yet intensely fruited in the mouth, it offers a lovely foundation of very fine tannins and refreshing acidity before finishing long and layered. Drink it 2015 to 2025+.

Not far from the McLaren Vale township lies a vineyard of old, dry-grown Grenache that I’ve long admired. In 2012 we sourced a tiny parcel of terrific fruit from these old warriors. Grenache is a hero variety for McLaren Vale and is experiencing a renaissance. Historically, it’s been a workhorse and something of a second cousin to Shiraz. But when carefully grown and gently handled it has the capacity to make beautiful, expressive wines. Ours is serious Grenache, with intensity and concentration; but it equally displays the soft, silky texture we aim to build into all of our wines. There’s also plenty of characteristic McLaren Vale Grenache spice.

James Halliday’s Wine Companion 2014 tasting note.

Rating:  96

Exceptional colour; 15% whole bunches, fruit sorted, wild-fermented, and basket-pressed to new (60%) and used French oak. An exceptional achievement for the vintage, with dark chocolate and black fruits on the bouquet morphing into a complex, decidedly savoury (in the best sense) palate, still with dark fruits, but giving impressive mouthfeel. Admirable balance and length; certified biodynamic vineyard, but not claimed as such.
